This post is all about how to create a homework station for kids!
What is a homework station?
A homework station is simply a designated area in your own home that’s set up with everything your child needs to complete homework and study. It’s a place where your child can go and get their school work done without distractions!
You’ll want this area to have plenty of surface space for them write, draw, complete projects and comfortably read. Additionally, It should also include a nice variety of supplies they may need to complete any of these tasks!
How To Create a Homework Station For Kids
1. Find the right area in your home
First, you’ll want to look around your home and try to find a good spot for the homework station.
This doesn’t need to be an entire room or even a large space. Work with what space you have in your home, even if it’s just a little corner somewhere.
Popular spots for homework stations are often the kitchen, a space in the living room, the child’s bedroom or a playroom/office. Basically, you can create a homework station wherever you can find space.
If possible, you’ll want to keep in mind what type of activities happen in the space you’re considering. Is there often a loud tv on? What about music playing? Is there a lot of foot traffic in this area? Does this space provide any natural day light?
While it’s important to think about these factors, try not to stress too much about it. We’ll go over a few tips and tricks on how to make the space work for you regardless of where it is!
2. Make the space comfortable
Next, it’s time to focus on making their homework station comfy.
As a child I remember sitting in the kitchen at a small crowded kitchen counter. It was hot from the oven/stove, the chair made my legs dangle and go tingly and the afternoon sun would always blind me about 15 minutes into starting my homework.
Not exactly comfortable.
Wherever you decide to set up the homework station make sure there is plenty of desk/table space.
Some ways to make your child’s homework station comfortable include:
- Get a comfortable chair

Consider picking up a desk chair rather than pulling over a kitchen table chair or otherwise hard chair. This doesn’t need to something extremely luxurious, just a chair with some cushion on the bottom and nice supportive back.
- Have a mini fan available
Depending on where you decide to set up the homework station, consider providing a small fan. Places like the kitchen can become hot and stuffy while you’re busy cooking dinner in the afternoon. No one can concentrate when they’re hot and sticky. This is an easy fix!
- A small lamp
If the area you found doesn’t provide much natural day light, a desk lamp is a must. This is also important for being able to comfortably see at night if you get home late or if a school project rolls into the later hours of the night.
3. Help limit distractions
No matter where you set up the homework station, there are bound to be some distractions.
Luckily, there are quite a few ways and things we can do to help limit these distractions regardless of where your space is.
A privacy screen like this is a great way to help limit distractions in any space. This is especially helpful if you’ll have multiple kids doing homework in the same space. You can totally create your own “privacy screen” by just having them prop up two folders too!
You can also pick up earplugs for kids so that they can really block out unwanted noises. Having a nice pair of headphones within reach is also a great idea!
4. Make the homework station cute
Make the homework station cute and inviting. This will help get your kid excited to use it and really make it a space they enjoy being in!
You don’t need to go overboard but even just adding a few simple touches can really make a difference!
Consider picking up their needed homework supplies in their favorite colors! Go on Amazon and search “pink paper clips” or “blue stapler”, etc. I can almost guarantee you that you’ll be able to find every single item in their favorite color or design!
Other ways to make their homework station cute:
- Add a desk plant in a fun shaped pot (dinosaur plant holder, llama planter, etc.)
- Find some bright, encouraging wall art
- A small cute desk rug
- Make it vibey with LED light strips
- Have a fun desk mat
How adorable is this desk mat? Something as simple as this will add some color to the space and liven it up! Psst: They have a desk mat just like this but its a rainbow with a unicorn if your little one is into that like mine would be!
5. Gather the homework essentials
Alright, time for the nitty gritty and true heart of what makes a homework station for kids functional!
What supplies you need to keep on hand will slightly vary depending on what grade your little one is in. In the earlier years you may need more craft type supplies. The older they get they may need more technical supplies like grafting paper, protractor, etc.
Here’s a general list of what your homework station should include:
- Lose paper
- Extra notebooks
- Crayons
- Pencils
- Pencil sharpener
- Markers
- Calculator
- Ruler
- Erasers
- Scissors
- Glue sticks
- Tape
- Mini trash can
- Clock/timer
Be sure to ask your child what they feel like they’ll need. Check in during the year as well to make sure their needs haven’t changed!
6. Make the homework station organized
This goes without saying, you can’t expect anyone (especially a child) to be able to be productive and stay focused if their space is a mess.
If your homework station has relatively small desk/table space, being organized and using the space wisely is absolutely essential!
Make sure that the homework station is neat, orderly and organized. Luckily, this is pretty easy to get done with a few staple products!
A small desk organizer can do a lot for a small homework station! Something like this can hold all of their basic homework essentials like pencils, sticky notes, loose paper, etc. This will make all of their supplies easy to reach while keeping things organized!
A small caddy like this is a perfect option for holding more arts and craft supplies! You can add markers, colored pencils, crayons and more to a caddy while still keeping them separate and organized.
Another organized storage idea is to create a homework cart
You can also create an entire homework cart to place next to a table or desk. A homework cart like this is large enough to hold all of your child’s homework necessities!
We use our cart more for arts and craft supplies but you could easily switch some things out and turn it into the ultimate homework cart!

7. Personalize the homework station
Lastly, we want to try to truly make the homework station for kids – for them! Personalize it and make it a place they can really call their own.
You can do this by adding a name sign to the wall above the desk or even adding a way to display their art and projects. I love this idea because if your home is anything like mine, you’re running out of room on your fridge! This gives them yet another space to hang their creations and express themselves.
We actually have this exact artwork display in our playroom and love it!
That’s it! Follow these steps and you’ll have the perfect homework station for kids in no time at all! This space will be everything your child need to help them succeed in their school work at home.
